Marwa Atik

Tell us a little about you(your background and how was it like)?

I’m originally from Morocco but i was born and raised in The Netherlands – Almere. I have been visiting Morocco once a year since i was a kid. It is like living in two worlds, they both feel like home to me. I’m studying International Law now and i want to pursue an international career, traveling is my passion.

What do you value most from your country?

Besides the culture, i value their humbleness. It is so amazing for me to see how people treat each other with kindness and try to make the best of their lives while living in a third world country. Money really isn’t everything.

Who influences you to go after your goals?

Honestly, my dad. My mom comes from a rich family so she had a free pass while coming here. On the other hand, my dad wasn’t so lucky. He came here (illegally) at age 17 without any family – just one friend. He has lived under the radar for years, build his own career and then met my mom. I really admire how he decided that he didn’t want that life anymore and he created his own dream life.

What advice can you give a teen about going through hardships?

It will be better!! Even though that sounds unbelievable at the moment, it won’t always be like that – believe me. I personally live by my own phrase ‘the future keeps me going’. That’s because there are SO so so many beautiful moments ahead of you, the best days of your life haven’t even happened yet. You just have to push through to see what it’s like. And when you get there, you are going to be forever thankful that you did. All those hardships and tough moments will be worth it.

If you and only three wish to change your family or the world’s life what would they be?

1. No violence, for sure. It’s not pleasant to see someone in pain, even though you’re not involved yourself. As i was sitting in a very crowded bus, an old couple came in. A kid decided to stand up and let them take his seat, he even helped them sit. I looked at everyone’s faces and they were all smiling. Humans love kind actions, happines and a healthy connection with others. Why would we hurt each other?
2. Communication! We can not change anything if we don’t talk about it. There’s also these people who talk but don’t listen to others. The world needs to come together and decide TOGETHER, because this is our world and everyone lives in it. It’s not supposed to be in the hand of a small bunch of unreliable people, every single person has an opinion that is worth sharing.
3. The government and world politic has to fall apart. You may not see it now, but you will one day. These are the people that decide and monitor literally everything about our lives. Who gave them the right? They came up with a system where we have to work or go to school for 5 days a week for almost the rest of our lives? By the time you’re done, you are almost dead. And what have you done besides working your ass off for them? The power and freedom of the people has to return to the people. Was there a time u helped others out?Of course. Whether it’s lending money i can miss at the moment or helping someone up when they fall. Very recently, i was waiting on the train and this old couple next to me forgot their bag. I saw that they were about to enter the train, so i ran up to them and gave it. They were SO happy because there personal belongings were there and they thanked me. This really made my day. Doing good and seeing how happy it can make someone, it’s a great feeling. However, you have to be selective about who you help, some people just want to suck your energy out.

Are you happy in the position you are now in life?

I am not happy or unhappy. I am at peace. I am glad that i get the opportunity to chase my dreams and study law. I have a roof above my head, wonderful friends and family. But this is about personal growth. I thought that i would be done with growing when i turned 18, but that is all an illusion. I’m far from done, i’m still trying to find myself and figure myself out. Finding myself and traveling in the process will make me truly happy. But i am very at peace right now.

What questions would you like me to make next for the new interviees coming to the website?

Let people talk about their passion – what makes them happy in their free time? What are their interests? Maybe even something about personal and environmental growth. This will help people with self-reflection and identifies what they really like or want to do.
