Victor Tellez Interview

Introduce Yourself: My name is Victor Tellez, I’m a 23 year old aspiring artist from central Connecticut in the US. As the son of two Mexican parents I grew up with both cultures feeding me. I’m drawn to anything artistic, be it music or dance, theater, writing, all forms of visual fine arts, fashion, design, illustration, comic books, anything. That’s my thing, finding expression and getting to know and understand people. My own art is abstract and through that I try to learn about the world. I’m really talkative, good conversation is always something I enjoy and something I try to create regularly so if you ever speak to me bee prepared to stand for a little while

Thoughts On People In The World?: People fascinate me, because at the end of the day we usually aren’t very different from one another beside our upbringing. I believe that people are what they are taught to be, so it’s important to show them a lot of options and empower them to make decisions on who they intend to become. We do people a disservice by limiting them, even if it keeps them comfortable or happy in the moment. I’m a work in progress and it’s important to look at everyone as just that, to be compassionate and kind and cultivate a better world through each other. Normally, people are fun.

What are your inspirations & goals?: I want to be a positive force in people’s lives, have them look on memories of me and smile or say that they’re happy they had that moment for some reason. Ultimately I just want to be a good person. In a more focused way, I want to do that through art. I had a dream once that I was standing in a gallery looking up at what I knew was my masterpiece, crying in happiness. When I woke up I realized I never actually saw it, and I cried because I knew that whenever I get discouraged I can think about that dream. I’ll work until I see that piece with my own eyes. I would love to open a media distribution and production company one day, have artists getting paid to create everyday and have the freedom to do the same, show artwork around the world and empower creative people to do so. I want world to see art as absolutely vital to life and culture. It’s a long road ahead but my friends and I are up for the challenge.

How would you impact the world?: I want more people to express themselves, to understand each other better. Even if my art doesn’t do that on the scale I hope, I know that every person’s interaction with another can help that happen. So I try to be a good person by my own standard.

Struggles In Life? : I’ve struggled with mental health obstacles for most of my life. More than any symptom that I deal with daily, the stigma of having these struggles is pretty serious and people don’t even realize they’re doing anything. So more often than not I don’t mention it and quietly deal with all of it alone or with a very select few. It’s funny, most people who know me say they wouldn’t ever guess because I dont show it, but that’s not a compliment nor does it make anything better. It makes opening up and being honest difficult, so I often don’t feel like I can get very close to people. That’s part of why I turn to art, to connect and show people that we aren’t so different.

How do you feel about yourself? Any changes you would make? : I’m not my biggest fan to be honest. If you asked my friends what they thought my confidence level was, on a 1-10, they’d tell you it must be about an 8. In fact it’s probably closer to a 4 or 5. Maybe that’s what I would change, because I know I’m working on bettering myself regularly, but I can be very critical of where I am in life. I guess I like who I am but not where I am. Check back in a year, I’ll only have improved if all goes well.

What does love mean to you?: Love to me means respecting, being compassionate about, selflessly caring for and dedicating oneself to something. If you love something you have to accept its flaws, limitations and challenges while also driving to improve it, not for your own sake but for the sake of its well-being. Of course there are different kinds of love and they normally are expressed differently but this idea stands true for all of them. Love is selflessness, admiration, kindness and nurturing.
