Thevani Maduray Interview

Introduce Yourself: Hi, I’m Thevani Maduray. I’m a freelance copywriter and proofreader living in Cape Town, transplanted from Durban. My passions include reading (obsessively), music, dancing (badly) and exploring everywhere and anywhere. The greatest loves of my life are my family and friends.

Thoughts On People In The World?: One of the greatest lessons history teaches us is that bad times never last – and neither do the good. We as a society have a responsibility to be engaged with what is happening around us and, more importantly, take a stand against oppression. We as citizens have the responsibility to educate ourselves and others that the world can be a better place and that we as individuals can make positive changes, no matter how small. The most important thing is that we do not turn a blind eye to the pain of others, because it is indifference and apathy that allows evil to win, and that is something we cannot let happen.

What are your inspirations & goals?: I’m constantly inspired by the stories of everyday people who have changed the world for the better. Art and culture has always shown me new and interesting ways of thinking and of seeing the world. We grow up thinking things just have to be a “certain way” but artists and inventors have shown that is not true. My main goal in life is to travel widely and see the beauty and reality of the world for myself. Hopefully this will give me the inspiration to write the novel that’s been living in my head for years.

How would you impact the world?: To show people the importance of reading and creativity. These aspects of life constantly get left behind in the pursuit of success and money, but opening your mind up to new perspectives and places. It is so critical to encourage empathy and understanding – it’s the difference between genuine acceptance and mere tolerance.

Struggles In Life? : One of my biggest struggles is with rejection and harsh criticism. As a sensitive person it really takes me a while to recover from being hurt, which I hate, because it always pushes me to be a lover. I’ve been so lucky to have people in my life who have helped me deal with overcoming it and learning to love myself.

How do you feel about yourself? Any changes you would make? : I would love to be taller (lol). The main thing I’d want to improve is my persistence. I’d love to not give up so easily when times get tough.

What does love mean to you?: To me, love means acceptance and opening yourself up to new experiences. It’s about opening your mind to understanding others and most importantly, understanding and accepting yourself.
