ntroduce Yourself: My name is Chris Freund, I am a photographer and sculptor working in West Hartford, CT, USA.
Thoughts On People In The World?: The world is filled with belief systems that indoctrinate people into hate, repression of difference, and a lack of respect for one’s fellow human beings. There is no ideology important enough that it should supersede the unconditional love and dignity all people are owed.
What are your inspirations & goals?: As an artist, my goal is to make the most resonant, formally satisfying images possible using the aspects specific to photography. I draw inspiration from film, my experience dealing with sexuality, and dreams. My goals in life as a whole would be a quiet life with my boyfriend and being able to make enough money to support myself while creating my art.
How would you impact the world?: Honestly leaving a mark on the world isn’t a high priority of mine. I feel that my work will always be niche, but I do hope to leave a small fingerprint on the art world and/or inspire future artists.
Struggles In Life? : I currently deal with depression, anxiety and addiction and am receiving treatment for all three. My adolescence was challenging, as a bisexual kid in Catholic schooling. A lot of difficulty comes with just trying to relate to people and eventually coming to accept that you cannot be in another person’s mind and truly take on his or her perspective.
How do you feel about yourself? Any changes you would make? : It varies day-by-day, moment-to-moment. I love the work that I do and am immensely proud of it, and consider myself one of the most talented and interesting artists working, but a lot of the time I dislike myself; that’s just the way it is with depression. There’s a lot I would change, physically and mentally, but I would say I am slowly working towards bettering my state.
What does love mean to you?: For me love is an opening up, an exchange of each other, body and mind. It is sharing the whole self and accepting the whole of the other.
