Laurel Tsali Brewington Interview

Introduce yourself?: My name Is Laurel Tsali Brewington, I’m 22 years old. I was born in England and raised everywhere, perks of being a military child. I’m currenly a senior at UNC-Pembroke double majoring in Criminal Justice and Sociology.

What inspires you everyday?: My family. I come from a big, loud, super close, supportive family. I have an awesome mom and dad who tell me everyday to keep pushing and to learn from my mistakes. They have instilled a confidence in me that has truly showed me the potential that lies within myself. My sisters, are my backbones. They’re my best friends and they always pick me up when I fall, which is quite often. They remind me that I’m unique and different and I need to embrace that.

What is something you would change about people in the world?: Something I would change about the people in the world would be their judgement. It’s so beautiful to see the difference that lies in everyone instead of judging them for how they are different. We live in such a judgmental, cruel world, and if you’re different than you’re casted out or frowned upon and I disagree with that. Being different and unique and cultural is such a beautiful thing.

How do you feel about the people in the world?: As much as I want to say that I think people are so amazing and that we’ve really progressed in this world, I can’t. We have people in this world who are the epitome of brilliant, world changers, peace makers, strong, go-getters, etc., but on the other hand we have people who are cruel and judgmental and that’s what holds us back. All in all, I think people just want to be loved and understood no matter who they are.

What is something you’ve struggled with in life?: Something I have struggled with in life is my self confidence. I was bullied very bad when I was younger and still at almost 23 years old those actions have impacted my self confidence and self love. Words are so powerful whether they’re negative or positive, and unfortunately I was told negative things about myself and I struggle with overcoming the words and realizing how much I am worth.

What is a positive message you would give others?: Love and accept each other. We are all humans, we all go through tough times and we’re all different, we need to learn to love and accept our differences and live in peace with each other. Instead of judging ones culture or outer looks, learn from them, get interested in who they are. And if you are being judged or ridiculed or hurt, keep going, keep pushing because I promise, it gets better. Loving and accepting yourself is greater than anyone else loving and accepting you.

what is some things you wanna tell people in the world and be honest? : Some things I want to tell people in the world is to stop being so cruel and stop hurting each other. Whether it’s on social media or in person, stop it. Being cruel is not making you look tough or look bigger and better than anyone. People will think differently than you in life, people will prefer things you don’t, people will live a life you don’t live, and that’s okay. That’s what makes this world so beautiful is that we are all so different, but what kills the world is that we are cruel to others. Your strength doesn’t come from being cruel, it comes from being kind and loving.
