Samantha Interview

My name is Samantha, I’m 23year old university student with dreams that have almost nothing to do with what I’m studying lol

What inspires you everyday

Music, fashion, poetry, art. And ultimately my loved ones inspire me to be a better person, for them and for myself.

What is something you would change about people in the world

I would ask people to be more open. To be more  open minded and understanding of other People, especially those who lifestyles maybe completely opposite of theirs. Everyone is fighting their own battle and to pass negative judgements without seeking to understand something is ignorant and can also be arrogant. We need less of that in this world.

How do you feel about people in the world

I feel like most people are good. I also feel like many people hurt others because they themselves have been hurt in life in some way that may inspire a lot of negativity which they will inevitably spread around. But over all I believe that with patience and a willingness to be open, people can heal if they so choose to try and findd the positivity in life that can be all around them.

What is something you’ve struggled with in life

Self love. As a young black girl in a suburban middle-class white neighborhood outside of Toronto there were hardly any positive depictions of black people let alone black girls* outside of my family while I was growing up. It was not until university where my experiences of people and surrounding became more nuanced and diverse that I found my power and pride in who I was all along and who I am I embrace the individuality (usually expressed through dress/ fashion) that I saw on a university campus. Especially when juxstaposed with a uniform high school and the mindless preteens all wearing Abercrombie and aeropostale and Hollister for what seemed my entire elementary educative years.

What is a positive message you would give others
I would tell people to believe that your wildest dreams can be a reality. Believe in yourself.  Invest your heart, mind and actions into the things you want to manifest in your life. Don’t shy away but instead chase these things that you’re afraid of. Because most often than not, it’s our lack of confidence and belief in ourselves that keep us back from making our life into what we really want it to be.
And to spread that determination and positivity towards personal achievements in life, that others may too find their own light and motivation to go after the things that inspire them.

Last question if you could make a difference in the world how would you do that
Tough question, but I will continue to spread love on a local level, to my family and friends around me. In the long run I’m going to doing more community work at local charities and soup kitchens. The difference you make in the world is through your efforts whether that’s on a world scale or not. I’ve also begun giving socks and older, lightly used items to homeless people I see around the city. It might not change the whole world, but it may change someone’s world 🙂
