My name is Devyn Thompson and I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. I’m currently a Freshman at Bethune-Cookman University which is located in Daytona Beach, Florida.
What inspires you everyday
My biggest inspiration would have to be my mother. From everything she’s endured throughout her lifetime, she never gave up on herself and she never gave up on me. Her hardwork, dedication, and fearlessness is something that can’t be taught. She sacrificed so much for me to have a better future and that’s why I love her.
What is something you would change about people in the world
The love and respect that we should have for each other. I don’t believe we were born to hate each other but it was taught or instilled in some people based off the circumstances of past events. If people would just have mutual respect for others and what they believe in, then we as a people could avoid so much negativity. People don’t want to help others if their problems have nothing to do with them. That’s a big problem that needs to change for the sake of the future generation.
What is your view on the people in the world
That all people are beautiful and can contribute to making the world a better place. At the end of the day, the world is a beautiful place and most of the time, we as a people fail to recohnize that because of all the negativity, whether it be on a local or national level. We have to give credit to those who do want to make the world a better place because they don’t have to help others but they do it anyway. Once we learn to love and respect each other, life would be much easier for us all.
What is something you’ve struggled with in life
My biggest struggle was the fear of failure. At one point of my life, I fell under depression. I felt as if I didn’t have a purpose in life and I wasn’t good enough for anybody. But, because of my faith in God, the help of my family, and my thirst for knowledge, my entire life was changed around. I felt better, on both a physical and mental level, and I knew that every morning when I wake up, I knew that I woke up with a purpose.
What is a positive message you would give others
I would tell them that they are special and to never give up on themselves. Never give up on your dreams and career aspirations because life is too short. Make a difference while your here. You never know who you can inspire.
Last question if you could make a difference in the world how would you do that
I would start foundations that help the people on a national and global level. I would help the future generation get a better education to decrease drop-out rates across the country to let them know that they can be successful and that they can follow their dreams.
