Hanaila Starks Interview

1. Tell a bit about yourself

2. What’s are you very passionate about

3. What do you enjoy about life

4. What’s for best thing that’s ever happened to you

5. Describe a typical day for you

6. What’s your goal for the future

7. Where do you see yourself in 5- 10 years

8. What do you think true love means

9. What are your strengths and weaknesses

10. Who inspires you?

11. Do you have any questions for me

1. My name is Hanaila, and I am 19 years old. I am currently a sophomore at Whitworth University with a major in Business Management and minor in Leadership. I love all sports, especially volleyball and tennis. Music is also a big part of my life whether I am singing in choir or dancing hula.
2. I am very passionate about executing great customer service. Being in retail, you do not always have the happiest customers. But, helping people with their everyday needs is something that I want to do for the rest of my life. I love seeing someone’s face light up with joy after I assist them with something as small as showing them where to find a specific item, or telling them that they look beautiful. It is amazing to me how the little things could actually affect a person positively in a big way.

I am passionate about music as well. When you hear a song, it can instantly change your mood or evoke a memory. I believe that music is a language that everyone can understand. Whether I am singing for hundreds of people in my choir or singing solo for a friend, I always try to remember that whatever I am singing needs to come from the heart. My choir teacher says that when that happens, you can help a person to heal, to let go, to feel. That is how powerful music is.
3. To start, I love life itself. It is complicated, ambiguous, and right when you think you know where you’re going, the winds of chance change. But, it is also something you can change for the better if you want to. I believe that destiny and free-will are intertwined. Everyone was meant to be someone; it is up to you to choose who you want to be. For me, the simple things are what I love the most about life. Laughing with my friends, spontaneously jumping into a lake, sitting on rooftops, and hiking to the top of a mountain to see the sunset. It honestly does not take or cost much to make me happy, because my family and friends already make me feel like a million bucks everyday.
4. I have been continuously blessed throughout my life, but having my family’s support with everything that I do is something that I often take for granted. When I wanted to join the girls’ tennis team at my high school, my mom encouraged me. When I cried late at night, by brother held me. When I was unsure of what to do, my sister guided me. I am grateful to have a family that is not only there for me always, but for people who believe that I can reach the sky so much that they gave me wings to fly.
5. On most days, I work an eight or nine hour shift. However, on my days off you can easily find me hiking on trail with my friends, or in my car driving to a place I’ve never been to but always wanted to see.
6. One of my goals for the future is to travel the world. This planet is filled with so many cultures and people, and I would love to learn about them one country at a time.
7. In 5-10 years, I see myself as a store or customer service manager at a major retail company somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. I could see myself being happily married, with three cats and two dogs for children. By that time, I hope that I have travelled to at least seven different countries that I have never been to before. Also, buying a beach house for my mom is number one on my adult bucket list.
8. When people ask me what I think love is, I always refer them to the Bible verse 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 because it speaks for itself: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preservers. Love never fails.”
9. Some of my strengths are that I am hard-working, positive, driven, and not afraid to stand up for someone or something that I believe in. On the other hand, my weaknesses are that I tend to be impatient and extremely stubborn if I do not want to do something.
10. My mom is without a doubt my biggest inspiration. When my parents divorced, she was on her own to raise three kids. She worked three jobs in order to put my sister through college, give me a chance to play club volleyball, pay the bills and have food on the table every night. We never lacked nutrition, support, or love. Someday, I hope to be as selfless and caring as my mother. Without her, I would not be where I am today

Corinne Nguyen Interview

1. Tell a bit about yourself

1) I am 17 years old, as of yesterday! I am going to be a senior in high school next semester. My friends would say I’m kind, goofy and outgoing. Right now, I’m working with Kindergarteners at the Summer Program at Boys and Girls Club! 🙂

2. What are your hobbies

2) I love to sing, I’m in the top choir at my high school, and I’ve been in a children’s choir that toured to places like New York’s Carnegie Hall to perform at! I’m also the drum major in my marching band, so I conduct the band

3. What is your perspective view on the world

3) As of right now, I feel like everyone is focusing on characteristics that make us different, and not focusing on what brings us together.. I feel that violence is at a high right now with all of the shootings in the US and other uses of weapons in other countries. But, also at the same time, I feel that the world is coming to a more accepting place for those who want to be different and that it’s okay for you to be who you want to be.

4. What do you think true love is about?
4) I feel like true love is when you have no hesitation to be who you are in a relationship, and that you only change for the better with them because you want to. Relationships are a team effort and you have to both be pulling the same weight for things to work. I feel like your significant other should be someone you consider a best friend before anything else, because if the lovey dovey part of the relationship, or the “honeymoon phase” ends, then you have no actual bond with your partner other than the physical things.. If that makes sense

5. What is something you’ve struggled throughout

5) So far, throughout my life, I feel that I have struggled with many things.. I’ve been through things that I feel has made me more mature than other teenagers my age. But if I’ve learned one thing so far, it’s to stand up for the things that make you truly happy. My sophomore year of high school was the worst year of my life. I wasn’t getting along with my mom, I just got out of a relationship and within two weeks started seeing someone else (and my mom hates the other guy), and my grades weren’t as good as they should be. Everyday was a battle within myself to gain the courage to so what I thought was right. An entire school year passes of me being emotionally defeated everyday, and one day I just decided to go to the police station and the district courthouse to find a way to move in with my dad and start over on a clean slate with him. Fastforward a week following that, I moved into his house. It’s been a year since I’ve lived with my dad, and I’ve never been more in control of my

*stepmom give my the freedom that my mom never did. I have a grades are the best they ever been, with a solid 4.0 GPA all year! And, I’m still with that guy, going strong for almost two years. Things get bad, but I learn to look to the future with positivity and that’s what gets me through the rainy days 🙂

6.what are you truly passionate about
6) I’m truly passionate about making other people happy and helping them out. I feel like that is my purpose in life. The joy of others makes me happy. I love helping people when they need someone to bring them out of a dark place. I preach positivity because I feel that the world is in so much turmoil that we could all really use it!

7. What do you plan for the future
7) My plans for the future are pretty simple.. Go to college, get a degree, get a steady job, get married, pop out some babies, and all of those other things you do when you’re older!! I just know that I want to have a future in which I am in control. I also just wanna travel the world, and eat tons of food!!😂

8. Describe a typical day for you
8) A typical day for me right now is: wake up at around 9:30 and get ready for work, then at 10:45 head to work! I get off at 5, and then I usually go home and take care of my little sister, or go out with friends.

9. Do you have any questions for me
9) What inspired you to do this?

Devon Mullen Interview

1. Tell a bit about yourself

I am 21 years old, and from Ontario Canada about 2 hours north of Toronto. I have a boyfriend who is 25 and I have been with him for just over 2 years. I am a college student, studying Early Childhood Education. I have an older brother, who no longer lives at home with us.

2. What are you very passionate about

I am very passionate about things I believe in, and the people I meet. I belive there is good, in everything and everyone even if you can’t find it right away. I don’t believe in just giving up on something, because there is something blocking your way. If that makes sense at all? haha

3. What do you plan for the future

I plan to finsih my schooling, for Early Childhood Education, they I may follow it up with my undergrad in Developmental Psychology. I hope that my boyfriend, and I are able to finally get our home together, and begin our lives.

4. What are your hobbies

I actually don’t have really hobbies. However, I sometimes do some sketching. But I’m not really a hobbiest.

5. What is something that inspires you

People. People inspire me. They terrify me, but inspire. Seeing what is possible, and what a change a single person is able to do is so inspirational.

6. What are your biggest influence

My past, and myself. My past, is one that I don’t believe I could explain in a day. However, everything that I have triumphed has molded me into who I am, and who I don’t want to become.

7. What is something you’ve struggled with in the past

Mental Illness, bullying, and a relationship with my father that cannot be repaired. I suffer from severe anxiety and depression, and on some days I am not able to get out of bed. Being bullied is something that I will never forget. I will never forget, being afraid to go to school, or even go out into public, because not only were the children bullying me, but my teacher as well. My father and I are like oil and water. We just don’t go. We have struggled my entire life, and it has gotten to the point where there will be no fixing it.

8. What is your perspective view on the world

The world is fucked up, (apologies if you cannot use that word, feel free to paraphrase). The world and the way it is today makes me terrified to bring children into it. No one is able to say anything without someone jumping down their throat shoving their views down there. And you know what? I believe that everyone has a right to their own beliefs and ways of life. However, don’t push your belief onto someone else, because you feel that what you believe in is the only thing that is correct. If only society would realize that having your opinion and belief is okay and it is actually what the world was built on. But alas, that will never change. The world just needs to relax, and learn to love and be loved.

9. What does true love mean to you

Wanting to be better and do better. Not only for yourself, but for those around you.

10. Do you have any questions for me?

What/who gave you the idea to begin this journey of sharing stories from those around the world?
